Let's see, what can I say about breed care? The Belgian Malinois possesses a strong desire to work. This is a very intelligent and trainable dog. A big part of breed care for the Belgian Malinois is that he/she has daily regular activity and or a job to do. The Malinois is happiest when it is working. This confident breed loves their families, but may be somewhat reserved with strangers. They are naturally protective of their owners without being overly aggressive.
The Malinois is a relatively easy keeper due to their medium size and short coat. They do shed and extra brushing sessions will be needed during the shedding seasons. A good slicker brush will help remove dead coat during shedding season. Their nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid overgrowth and cracking. Their ears should be checked regularly to avoid a buildup of wax and debris, which can result in an infection. Teeth should be brushed regularly. Grooming is occasional.
Energy & Exercise
Have you ever had the pleasure of watching a police-dog handler put a Malinois through an obedience routine? If so, you've seen first hand what an obedient, bright, and eager breed this is. Problems arise, though, when this smart, people-oriented dog is underemployed and neglected. The Malinois needs exercise, and plenty of it! They prefer to be side by side with their adored owner. This is paramount to a Malinois happiness. To deprive a Malinois of activity and human companionship is to deprive him of his very reasons for being. The Belgian Malinois has a very high level of energy. Make sure that you are ready to take on a Malinois' energy level before you purchase one!
